Goodbye XXIX, I am thirty years old (why, what were you thinking?) I had a wonderful Birthday weekend, and I put up a gallery cataloging my special day. We started out with Kathy giving me a nice card and present. You already know where we went to breakfast. Barkley gave me a special Birthday gift, running away to celebrate my birthday. After I dragged him back home we took Carter for his first kayak ride! Special thanks to Eric for snapping some pictures. After that we went to the zoo as a family. To finish it off, we went to the Boat House in Forest Park for dinner. It was a perfect day. However, Kathy decided to throw me a party, so Sunday we had a relaxed Pirate Party with my friends in St. Louis.

Crossing the finish line

Crossing the finish line

I successfully completed my first marathon on Sunday! Yes, I am still sore. Yes, it was very difficult. Yes, it was worth it. It was crazy running around that many people, there were 11,716 finishers (both half and full marathon). Things definitely thinned out when the half marathon cut out, but it was crazy running with that many people. The weather conditions were rough, namely the rain. I do wonder how much my waterlogged shoes+socks weighed at the finish :). At least I did not have to worry about overheating. The marathon was a cool way to tour the city, but when we started there was so much rain/fog you could only see the top of the arch “floating” in the air. As far as the run itself I was pretty strong up until about mile 19. I actually was ahead of the 4:15 pace group at that point. The next five miles were unbelievably difficult, but I am proud to say I kept jogging and only walked at the water stations. Not a quick jog (I was passed by one speed-walker), but it was a jog. I had a decent kick for the last mile and was able to sprint to the finish. My official results were finishing in 4:43:01, which isn’t bad considering my “goal” was a 4:30 (actually it was to finish, but you know). In retrospect, perhaps I should have paced better with the group but I am not at all disappointed with the result. Event photos are here, although there are none of me. Photos of me are here. Enjoy!

Trip to the St. Louis Zoo

Friday, April 17th, 2009

I had to go downtown to pick up my marathon packet, so I decided to take a detour and have the family enjoy the zoo with me. It was Carter’s first trip to the St. Louis Zoo and I think he enjoyed it. Some pictures are here.

Boléro

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Kathy and I went to see a sold out showing of Ravel’s Boléro… my favorite piece of music. This also meant the first time Carter had a babysitter. Carter did well and we enjoyed a beautiful night out.

Family Day Out

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Family day out! First, we took Carter for a nice visit of the St. Louis Art Museum. Pictures of that are here. It is really nice to live in a city with such world-class attractions! Then, we went for our first meal out as a family at P.F. Changs, and those pictures are here

Scaling Infinity

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Kathy & I saw the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra perform “Scaling Infinity”. It was beautiful. Thanks to my parents for the gift certificates, there really isn’t anything quite like hearing a world class orchestra live.

Forest Park date night

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Kathy & I in the Zoo on the River's Edgetrail I started a new job at Mobile Armor. To celebrate the change, Kathy & I spent a nice night out in Forest Park. We walked around the Zoo and then took out a paddle boat from the Boathouse. These are two of our favorite places in St. Louis and they each are uniquely St. Louis. We capped off the evening with a great dinner at the Boathouse. One nice touch was that, while on the paddle boats, we stumbled across a live concert that was part of the Taste of St. Louis. The obligatory picture gallery is here.

Labor Day weekend

Monday, September 15th, 2008

My parents came up for a very nice visit on Labor Day weekend. They helped us with some projects around the house, took us to the dog park, took out a kayak, watched me sail, and supported me in my triathlon efforts. My dad’s pictures are up here

City Museum

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Kathy & I in the hall of mirrors at the City MuseumToday, Kathy took me to the City Museum. Wow! That was a lot of fun. Strongly encourage you to bring your child there. As ours was not yet ready, we had to bring our inner-child. It was a blast! Hard to describe. The best description I have heard referring to it was a “surrealist landscape”, I would add “that begs to be explored.” Please enjoy the picture gallery here.
