I once again signed up for the St. Peter’s Rec-Plex Fall Triathlon. The results were not all that pretty, 299/413 overall. I had more bike problems, as my brand-new front derailleur came off its shims the first time I shifted. This resulted in the derailleur grinding against the cassette. This worsened to the point I had to spend 10 minutes on the side of the road trying to fix it. Eventually I just had to bend it so it would no longer interfere. My frustration with the race was offset by a visit from Carter and Mommy who congratulated me on finishing. I definitely still have the triathlon bug, but I hope I am done with the equipment problems. Post-race pictures are here.

I completed my first Olympic-distance triathlon. It made me want to go for 70.3, but time will tell… honestly, I wasn’t well prepared for this. On the plus side, since I did not push myself too hard, I did finish strong. Without a doubt the highlight was waving to Carter during the run (both out AND back) and having him recognize me and smile. THAT was winning first place. The competition itself…. well, I am proud to finish an Olympic distance event. My bike shop tuned my bike, but did not torque down the cable to my front derailleur, so I was stuck on the small gear the whole time. Oh, well, better than the big ring. Results are up. Again, not overly impressive. On the other hand, I was 29th in the swim… and the only time I swam between this event and the 2008 St. Peter’s triathlon was the swim practice for this triathlon. Makes me wonder what I would do with more practice. Of course, the swim doesn’t matter much, since it is less then half an hour but even the fastest cyclist is over an hour on the course. Need to get that bike time down! Oh, well, here is to next year! Here are the pictures
Race Across America
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009I took a nice 30 mile bike ride today, trying to get out before it was hot. About 2 miles from home, I saw a cyclist coming the other way. I politely waved. Then I noticed a SAG vehicle behind them with a windshield sticker titled “Race Across America”. Curious, I just looked up what Race Across America is. Turns out, this guy (or his relay team) was about 983 miles from completing a 3000 mile bike ride across the entire country! Some of competitors do this solo, finishing in little as 9 days! The whole thing is crazy, I can’t believe I have never heard of it… kudos to the competitors!
St. Peters Rec-Plex Triathlon
Sunday, October 5th, 2008Well, I am a triathlon addict. I completed the St. Peter’s Rec-Plex Triathlon. I finished 12/43 in my age group and 106/424 overall. Fairly pleased since I had not been working out much. The bike route was very fast and I averaged over 17mph (MapMyTri thought i did 18mph)! My slowest swim so far, but I was being very conservative on the swim. Looking forward to next year… if I can squeeze in the workouts!
Prairie Dog Century
Sunday, September 21st, 2008Update 9/24/2008 - Results are posted here and I am recognized as completing my first century here. My official average speed was 13.09mph. I forgot to clock back in before lunch, so it would have been more like 13.85mph. I signed up for the ride the rivers century and I think I can do a lot better by not stopping as long, now that I have more confidence.
Labor Day weekend
Monday, September 15th, 2008
My parents came up for a very nice visit on Labor Day weekend. They helped us with some projects around the house, took us to the dog park, took out a kayak, watched me sail, and supported me in my triathlon efforts. My dad’s pictures are up here
I am a winning triathlete!

Okay, second triathlon, even better results. I won the Clydesdale (200lb+) class for the short course! Results are here, but you have to scroll down a bit to find my class. I was happy to see I would have still trophied in my age-group class with my time. Next year… the long course! I was so inspired that I signed up for another triathlon in October. I am getting addicted. Some pictures available here
I am a triathlete!
Sunday, August 17th, 2008
So I am officially a triathlete. I finished the Alligator Creek Triathlon. It was a lot of fun. I definetly needed Kathy’s & Carter’s full support, and they were happy to oblige. I am really happy with how I did overall. I am awaiting official results, but from what was posted I was 83/306, with a time of 1:38:05. I actually placed higher in the bike section than the run, which suprised me. I was not suprised that I did very well overall in the swim, but proud nonetheless. I need to find an equilateral triathlon :). You can enjoy the pictures. The official results for my age group are here, and overall results are here.
Map My Triathlon
Monday, July 7th, 2008I have found a cool site called http://www.mapmytri.com that lets me map my workouts. Gotta love the mash-up. You can see my profile on the site. I am looking to integrate a workout RSS feed. Here is my usual bike route:
Joined Velog
Wednesday, June 11th, 2008At the request of Isaac I joined Velog. I added my ride log to the right. Overall training is going well. I swam from the dam to the island on the big lake… over half a mile. It is kind of fun to actually get somewhere while swimming, I am so used to just doing laps (even if the distances I am doing now are dwarfed by what I used to be able to do).
